What Happens in the First 30 Days?
A Simple Timeline for Families Figuring This Out
FACT: You don’t need a perfect plan.
FACT: You need to know what the next few weeks might look like.
This isn’t exact—but it’s what a lot of families I’ve worked with experience.
Week 1: Stabilize What Can’t Wait
It may seem obvious, but you first need to focus on immediate safety and health concerns for your mom or dad, especially:
Addressing fall risks
Coordinating care
Getting support in place
You’re not solving everything—you’re creating stability.
After getting the most urgent things addressed, it gets harder
Week 2: Start Conversations
There are quite a few conversations that can, and should, happen. These should involve, most importantly, your mom or dad, but also siblings and other decision makers. The clearer picture that is made does wonders for everyone when you talk about:
What’s changing
What feels manageable
What might need to happen next
These conversations don’t have to be perfect. They just need to start.
Week 3: Explore Options
Now you begin learning—not deciding.
What types of care exist?
What housing options are available?
What timelines are realistic?
This is where things begin to take shape.
With all of the information at your disposal…
Week 4: Decisions Start Forming
Not everything gets decided—but direction becomes clearer.
You may:
Narrow down housing options
Begin planning next steps
Start thinking about the home
Momentum replaces uncertainty.
